Juvenile
Detention Center
Boston, MA
Developing a design that balanced the necessary
security features with a humane environment for juveniles was a key
challenge of the Juvenile Detention Center for the City of Boston.
The center was constructed on the fifth floor of an existing police
station.
Through the careful selection of durable building
materials with integral colors and the use of softening
elements such as carpet and wood trim, the design has turned a
severe environment into an attractive and unthreatening place. The
facility it divided into areas of increasing security, with
the juveniles held in two wings that contain dormitory, recreation,
and isolation rooms, as well as toilet facilities. The entire secured
area is designed with ducts, and window screens that were selected for
their durability, security and suicide-limiting designs.
In creating a state-of-the-art juvenile holding
facility for the Commonwealth, DiMarinisi & Wolfe provided
architectural and interior design services. |
